Not Ganesh but Kali - Aurora reveals.

We discussed in class that one of the major ideas in Rushdies work is this dichotomy between the reality and illusion. In epifinia controlled gama house, illusion runs the show. Aires and epifania are amongst those who believe that absolutely nothing is wrong with the British rule and they in fact support the rule very vocally. Despite the fact that the independence struggle is on a full swing ( francisco camoens and aires - are directly affected by it) but epifania always reduces the entire campaign to
Just a 'northern propoganda' and that her family needs to stay away from all of this mess. Where epifania is able to suppress others in the family, aurora is not someone who would stay quiet about all that is wrong. Particularly, her creation under detention exposed the realities of her time which had no place in the gama house.                                        What interests me the most is her resistence to the 'ganesha bhagwaan'. Placed in the house by Aires, aurora throws these ganesha moortis out of the windows at night. Contrasting this, she puts a kali-mata on the walls as a part of her detention painting. Contextualizing this to the hindu tradition, we can see that it has a profound meaning adding to the dichotomy between reality and myth. Ganesh symbolizes happiness and removal of obstacles whereas kali mata stands for the 'ultimate reality', for punishment of wrong doers. Auroras choice of kali over ganesh, in my opinion, adds to the dichotomy between reality and illusion. She eliminates ganesha ( the generous god) as it is not in sync with the scenario in the gama house ( epifanias dictatorial rule and belles death) , replaces it with kali ( the one who punishes) as it is only realistic.
